Just a few minutes by bicycle from central Halmstad, Halmstad City Airport connects Halland with destinations across Sweden, Europe and beyond. Together with the region’s railways, ports and road network, it provides companies with exceptionally strong transport links, while also supporting emergency aviation and defence, and preparing for the next generation of aviation.

Halmstad City Airport’s central location makes air travel a practical part of everyday business for companies across Halland. Visitors arrive close to the city, while business travellers can reach customers and partners or continue to other destinations without spending unnecessary time getting to and from the airport.

“In Halland, we have air, rail, road and port infrastructure all within a relatively compact area,” says Anette Holmgren, Business Development Manager at Halmstad City Airport. “That combination gives companies flexibility in how they move people and goods, and makes Halland an efficient place from which to operate.”

Connections that keep business moving

In fact, around 80 per cent of the airport’s passengers travel for business. They use it to meet customers and partners, visit public-sector organisations and connect to onward flights. For Halland-based companies, this provides efficient access to wider business networks and markets.

“People can live close to the coast and to nature, with their families rooted here, and still travel quickly when work requires it,” Holmgren says. “For companies, that makes it easier to grow in Halland and attract skilled people who want both professional opportunities and a good place to live.” 

The same accessibility matters when something needs to be moved urgently. Through Jetpak, medical samples, equipment, documents and industrial spare parts can be dispatched directly from Halmstad rather than first being driven to another airport.

“For a hospital or a company, saving a few hours can be crucial,” she says. “Being able to send an urgent consignment directly from Halmstad saves both time and money.” 

Infrastructure for preparedness and defence

Commercial services are only one part of Halmstad City Airport’s role. As a designated preparedness airport, it must be ready to open outside normal operating hours for ambulance flights, organ transport, police aviation, Coast Guard operations, search and rescue, firefighting and other urgent missions. 

“We are part of Sweden’s infrastructure,” Holmgren says. “Commercial traffic is one pillar, but we are also here for essential public-service aviation and the Armed Forces. The airport’s full value lies in the combination of all three.”

The Swedish Armed Forces use the airport under a separate agreement for transport, exercises and military aviation. Halmstad is also home to the Swedish Armed Forces Technical School, FMTS, and a growing defence-related business environment. This wider defence presence creates opportunities for Halland-based suppliers in areas such as engineering, maintenance, logistics, security and training. 

“The Armed Forces have told us that Halmstad is an important airport for them,” Holmgren says. “Some days are quiet, while on others several military aircraft may arrive. Our role is to make sure the infrastructure is available when it is needed.” 

Preparing for the aviation of tomorrow

Halmstad City Airport takes a deliberately forward-looking approach to development, gradually adapting its infrastructure and operations as new technologies and requirements emerge. Solar panels supply electricity to the terminal, lighting has been converted to LED systems, and electric vehicles and machinery are gradually replacing fossil-fuelled alternatives. When the aircraft parking area was rebuilt, cables were installed beneath it to prepare for future electric or hybrid aircraft.

“A regional airport cannot decide the global standards for future aircraft,” Holmgren says. “But we can prepare the site, reduce emissions from our own operations and make sure that we are ready when the technology enters regular service.” 

Halmstad City Airport has also explored how regional airports can develop into local energy hubs, using available land and infrastructure to support renewable energy production and future transport systems. Its proximity to Halmstad University creates further opportunities for research and student projects in areas such as energy systems, AI, automation and future airport operations. At the same time, the terminal is being adapted to provide better facilities for passport and customs controls, increasing its readiness for future services outside the Schengen Area.

Taken together, these functions make the airport an important part of Halland’s wider offer to companies and investors. It helps create the conditions for businesses to establish and grow in Halland, with strong infrastructure, access to markets and skills, and a high quality of life.

“The airport is located in Halmstad, but we are here for the whole region,” Holmgren says. “I usually say that the name might be Halmstad City Airport, but it’s really Halland’s airport.”
